Empat jenis burung terancam punah Indonesia yang menghiasi prangko tersebut adalah elang flores (Nisaetus floris), mandar gendang (Habroptila wallacii), celepuk siau (Otus siaoensis), dan burung-madu sangihe (Aethopyga duyvenbodei).
Pada acara tersebut dilakukan pula penandatanganan Sampul Hari Pertama (SHP) prangko seri “Burung Terancam Punah Indonesia” oleh Menteri Kehutanan. Prangko empat jenis burung terancam punah ini dicetak sebanyak 50 ribu lembar dalam bentuk minisheet dan 300 ribu lembar untuk fullsheet.
Ketua Dewan Perhimpunan Pelestarian Burung Liar Indonesia (Burung Indonesia) Ani Mardiastuti menyatakan bahwa tanggal 15 Juli merupakan hari perayaan keragaman burung di Indonesia yang sekaligus Ulang Tahun Burung Indonesia ke-10. ”Melalui perangko diharapkan apresiasi masyarakat terhadap pelestarian burung dan habitatnya di Indonesia akan meningkat” ujar Ani.
Indonesia, sebagai negara mega bird diversity, sepatutnya bangga memiliki kekayaan jenis burung sebanyak 1.597 jenis (16 persen) dari total 10.000 jenis yang ada di dunia. Jumlah ini, menempatkan Indonesia sebagai pemilik burung terbanyak di dunia di urutan ke lima. Namun, kekayaan ini akan tiada artinya bila kesadaran kita terhadap pelestarian burung rendah.
Dari hampir 1.600 jenis burung di Indonesia, 126 jenis di antaranya merupakan jenis-jenis yang terancam punah. ”Prangko merupakan media yang efektif dan efisien dalam menjangkau seluruh lapisan masyarakat dan menembus batas teritorial suatu negara” lanjut Ani. Keempat jenis burung yang menghiasi seri prangko kali ini merupakan jenis-jenis burung endemik terancam punah yang terdapat di kawasan Wallacea.
Wallacea merupakan sebuah kawasan yang terdiri dari ribuan pulau besar dan kecil yang terletak di antara kawasan Asia di barat dan Australasia di timur. Sulawesi, Maluku, dan Nusa Tenggara merupakan bagian dari Wallacea. Posisinya yang unik membuat kawasan ini kaya akan fauna campuran dari dua benua tersebut sekaligus ratusan spesies endemik.
Berdasarkan Daftar Merah International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) empat jenis burung yang diabadikan dalam perangko tersebut berstatus terancam punah. Elang flores dan celepuk siau berstatus Kritis (Critically Endangered/CR), burung-madu sangihe berstatus Genting (Endangered/EN), dan mandar gendang berstatus Rentan (Vulnerable/VU).*

Perkiraan populasi tidak lebih dari 50 individu dewasa, karenanya ditetapkan sebagai Kritis (Critically Endangered/CR).
- Burung-madu sangihe (Aethopyga duyvenbodei) merupakan jenis burung-madu berukuran 12 cm yang hanya dapat dijumpai di pulau kecil dan populasinya tersebar terpisah. Populasinya di alam diperkirakan antara 13.000-29.000 individu dewasa.
