17 Years of Burung Indonesia

The Birdlife Indonesia Association, or commonly known as Burung Indonesia, was founded on 15 July 2002. This membership-based organization has been 17 years engaging in the conservation of birds and their habitats. Burung Indonesia is also part of the Birdlife International global partnership and actively involved in influencing the global conservation agenda.

The partnership is part of Burung Indonesia's commitment which is manifested in programs implemented in a number of work locations, namely Sumba, Gorontalo, Flores, Sumatra, western Java and the majority of Wallacea areas. Numerous conservation efforts, which were implemented through various approaches, lead to one goal: the conservation of birds and their habitats.

In the span of 17 years, Burung Indonesia has made great achievements. One of them is being the initiator of Ecosystem Restoration (RE) in Indonesia, which aims to restore the ecosystem to its original state in order to ensure the survival of birds and other animals in it.

To maintain biodiversity, Burung Indonesia has been collaborating with many partners, such as the Wallacea Partnership Program. The program is supported by CEPF and has been running for 5 years in the Wallacea region, one of the important biodiversity areas (IBA) in the world.

Another program has been carried out in Gorontalo for 10 years, focusing on maintaining the connectivity in Popayato-Paguat Landscape, another important area for biodiversity in Indonesia.

These partnership programs, which target communities, are part of conservation efforts on site level. Burung Indonesia always involves the community in implementing its conservation programs, including sustainable agricultural practices that bring positive impacts on ecosystem sustainability. Sustainable agriculture is now able to produce high-quality cocoa to which Fossa Chocolate, a Singaporean chocolate manufacturer, put interest in it. The collaboration of Burung Indonesia, Birdlife International, and Fossa Chocolate synergistically support the efforts of sustainable landscape management.

Numbers of conservation efforts have been undertaken for the past 17 years, However, challenges to nature conservation keep increasing. With the support of various parties, from the site level communities, local governments, to conservation partnership networks at the global level, Burung Indonesia will continue to strive to create a more sustainable nature of Indonesian archipelago.
