The Establishment of Cooperation between Burung Indonesia and Nine Technical Implementation Units in Wallacea Region

Burung Indonesia has succeeded in establishing formal cooperation with nine technical implementing units (TIU) of the Directorate General of Nature Resources Conservation (DG-NRC) of Ministry of Environment and Forestry on 9 March 2018 in Bogor. The agreement was one of Burung Indonesia’s efforts to support the government in conserving biodiversity and realize the management of the conservation area and its ecosystems collaboratively with the stakeholders in Wallacea region [1].[1].

The signing of this agreement is a continuation of the formal memorandum of understanding that had been previously established between Burung Indonesia and the DG-NRC on 29 December 2017, continued with the Conservation Partnership Coordination Meeting on January 10-11 2018 in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.

The outline of the programs and activities formulated in this meeting was then described in the cooperation agreement between Burung Indonesia and the Nine TIUs, namely Nature Resources Conservation Agency (NRCA) of East Nusa Tenggara, NRCA of South Sulawesi, NRCA of North Sulawesi, NRCA of Maluku, Bantimurung Bulusaraung National Park (NP), Aketajawe Lolobata NP, Balai Manusela NP, Kelimutu NP and MaTaLaWa NP.

Jihad, Biodiversity Mainstreaming Officer of Burung Indonesia, explained that every agreement has specific content depending on cooperation’s scope or conservation activities carried by each TIU. "Burung Indonesia and each TIU will cooperate according to their respective capacities to strengthen the function of Nature Reserve Areas (NRA) and Nature Conservation Areas (NCA) in the protection and preservation of biodiversity," he added.

These agreement documents not only cover the efforts to conserve biodiversity and their habitats and strengthen the functions of NRA and NCA management institutions, but also increase the participation of the community and stakeholders in nature conservation.

The cooperation scope between Burung Indonesia and Aketajawe Lolobata NP, for example, ranged from study on poaching level of parrot species to raise the knowledge and awareness of local government, village government and communities on sustainable natural resources management.
